KMM is the only one of this profile in Russia - it specializes entirely in marine heterotrophic bacteria and microscopic fungi. Microorganisms were collected from all regions of the World Ocean, including the Arctic and Antarctic. Strains were isolated during expeditions on board the R/V Akademik Oparin and other research vessels. The Marine Experimental Station (MES) of the Pacific Ocean Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is also of great help. At the MES (Sea of Japan, Peter the Great Bay, Trinity Bay) there is a diving service (sampling) and a room for microbiological work (a box, an autoclave and other equipment. Many countries support research in the field of marine microbiology, but in Russia, which is a maritime power, such research is almost not carried out. Meanwhile, marine microbes differ from terrestrial ones. They also often synthesize unique biologically active substances that have never been found in land microorganisms. Over the past years, we have validly described more than 200 new species, 50 new genera and 5 new families of marine microorganisms (this is an outstanding result). Information about the fundamental link between biodiversity and biotechnology has made it possible to discover a number of microbial producers of unusual bioactive compounds. Research results provided the source material for the inventory of the ocean microbial population resources and the substantiation of methods for targeted search for industrially important microorganisms. A large number of experimental articles, reviews and monographs have been published, which are widely cited in the world scientific literature.
The Marine Microorganism Collection of the TIBOC FEB RAS is a collection of general biological and biotechnological types. The KMM provides services, including scientific and service services for the identification of microorganism strains at the species level. Low-temperature freezing of microorganisms and lyophilization are used to guarantee the preservation of the fund. Research areas: study of the biological (genetic) diversity of microorganisms living in various marine ecosystems (routine methods and molecular biology methods); introduction into culture and comprehensive study of new strains of heterotrophic marine bacteria and fungal isolates; identification and description of new taxa; search for and study of new biopolymers, enzymes and secondary metabolites of microbial origin; development of accelerated methods for the identification of microorganisms at the species level (subspecies) based on MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry (proteomic analysis). We started working on metagenomics. Over the past three years, there have been several dozen requests from users in our country. We conduct a fairly intensive exchange of strains with collections in many countries, such as China, Japan, South Korea, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, etc. We had a long-term agreement with the National University of Singapore, and visited one of the institutes in Vietnam, where we solved the problem of mass death of shrimp (which the institute grows in its ponds for sale to cafes and restaurants). We cooperate with the A.N. Belozersky Research Institute of Physicochemical Biology at Lomonosov Moscow State University, the M.M. Shemyakin and Yu.A. Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Far Eastern Federal University, institutes of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and some other institutions in Russia.
